The San Juan fall concept pairs the scale of Colorado mountain country with the small patterns that make autumn photographs personal. Aspen trunks, changing leaves and reflections may carry a scene as strongly as a distant peak. Our aim is a considered mix of broad views and close studies, with enough flexibility to follow suitable light and seasonal conditions within an approved route.

We plan to explore color relationships, simplify busy aspen stands and use a telephoto lens to separate mountain layers. Reflections can become complete compositions or small visual accents. Rather than depend on a single famous overlook, instruction would encourage finding structure in trunks, slopes, water and the changing boundary between sunlight and shadow.
Aspens, forest interiors, mountain peaks, reflections and small autumn details are proposed subjects. The presence and intensity of fall color vary, and a storm can quickly change the scene. Mountain roads are a planning consideration rather than a promise of off-road or high-pass access.
Neal Nachman and Liz Stokes are developing small-group experiences around careful observation, personal field instruction and a fine-art perspective. We plan time to work a composition, respond to changing light and discuss camera technique. The final host team and group limit will be stated with the released itinerary and will depend on permits, transport and practical field conditions.
Wildlife welfare and care for the landscape shape our approach. We will use appropriate viewing distances, respect closures and other visitors, and avoid disturbing animals or sensitive habitat. The goal is thoughtful photography with room to learn, rather than a promise of a particular natural event.
The concept alternates morning landscape sessions with forest and intimate-scene work when the light suits those subjects. Travel days and location changes would be limited to a practical operating area. Image review may help participants identify repeated shapes and create a small cohesive fall portfolio. Backup locations will depend on road conditions and commercial authorization.
This is a planning framework. Locations, session order and subjects may change for weather, wildlife activity, access, permits, road conditions, safety and photographic opportunity. No exact shooting stops or departure dates are confirmed.
Committed beginners, intermediate photographers and advanced photographers can express interest. Participants should be able to operate their own camera and carry the equipment needed for the final itinerary. Field guidance will address composition, exposure and technique, with time for individual questions. Tell us about your experience and walking considerations; exact terrain, distances, pace and accessibility will be described before reservations open.
Bring a standard zoom, a telephoto for compressed mountain and forest compositions, and a tripod for low light. A polarizer may help with foliage and reflections when used selectively. Warm layers, weather protection and sturdy footwear are appropriate starting points; the final packing list will reflect elevation, access and walking requirements.
Altitude, cold mornings, mountain weather and road surface conditions must shape the itinerary. We will not assume that a scenic road is appropriate for the selected vehicle or group. Land-manager permissions, seasonal closures, lodging and transport will be researched before dates and pricing are announced. No specific pass or backcountry route is confirmed.
