Small Group Wildlife Photography Workshops

A wildlife photograph often depends on the choices made before the moment arrives. Our planned wildlife photography workshops combine patient observation with practical instruction, helping photographers connect camera technique, behavior and composition.

Neal Nachman and Liz Stokes are developing premium experiences for small groups. Typically 4–6 photographers, depending on the destination, itinerary, transportation, and applicable permit requirements. Final photography-host arrangements and any local guide or operator support will be confirmed with each itinerary.

From Camera Settings to Field Decisions

Instruction will be shaped by the subject, conditions and participants. We may compare autofocus areas, continuous focus, subject tracking and shutter speed, then consider how exposure responds to bright sky, dark backgrounds or reflective water.

The aim is to understand why a setting helps. You might use a faster shutter to hold wing detail, adjust your position for a cleaner background or choose a wider composition to tell more of the habitat story.

Birds in Flight and Changing Behavior

Flight photography brings together anticipation, tracking and timing. Where opportunities arise, we can work on acquiring a subject, following its movement and evaluating what made a sequence successful. We also pay attention to gesture, posture and the moments between bursts of activity.

A workshop cannot promise a particular bird, mammal or behavior. Sometimes the strongest learning opportunity comes from a common subject in useful light or from revisiting a technique while the scene is quiet.

Composition Beyond the Close-Up

  • Use backgrounds and subject separation to give the photograph clarity.
  • Choose eye-level or other appropriate viewpoints without disturbing wildlife.
  • Make environmental portraits that connect an animal to its habitat.
  • Work with light direction, negative space and visual balance.
  • Review your own frames to identify useful changes in technique or timing.

Ethical Wildlife Photography

Respect for animals and other visitors is central to the planned experience. We will maintain appropriate distance, follow site rules and avoid behavior that pressures an animal for a photograph. We do not plan baiting, forced flight or nest disturbance as photographic techniques.

Choose a Region and Learning Format

Explore land-based Florida wildlife photography tours, private Florida instruction and 2027 destination concepts such as Grand Teton and New Mexico, plus future wildlife and landscape destinations. These remain in development and are not open for paid booking.

Optional image review may be included where practical; the final itinerary will say whether it is offered and what equipment to bring. Each released workshop will also state skill expectations, terrain, pace and guide arrangements.

Browse the wildlife collection, birds of prey gallery and Photography Journal for the fine-art perspective behind our field approach.
